Marks and Spencer clothes sales fall as shareholders brand fashion 'ugly, vulgar, crude and cheap'

M&S are suffering a drop in sales blamed on the cold weather earlier this year, but share holders think the designs may be at fault

Marks and Spencer’s clothing revival was short lived after another drop in sales.
Boss Marc Bolland got a boost when M&S delivered its first rise in clothing takings in four years at the start of the year.
But he suffered another setback after general merchandise - mainly clothes - dropped 0.4% in the 13 weeks to the end of June.
Bolland blamed the latest fall on cold weather in May impacting demand for its spring and summer collections.
That said, it was much less than the 1% slide the market was expecting.

Meanwhile, quarterly food sales grew by 0.3% when rival grocers have posted declines and its online arm jumped 38.7%.
Bolland insisted: “We continue to make progress against our key priorities.”
It came as Bolland and the rest of the M&S board faced a grilling at the company’s annual general meeting yesterday.
Clothing is key to M&S’s success, with big efforts made to improve its designs and sourcing.
A collection by actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has also been a hit.
But shareholders lined-up to criticise its ranges.
One said: “Your patterns look like somebody’s had a bad dream, got out of bed and thrown paint at a canvas.”
Another said: “I could weep when I see what’s in stores today” singling out “ugly and vulgar” prints, and “crude, cheap” designs.
Marks & Spencer turned a corner in May by posting its first annual profits increase in four years - up 6.1% to £661.2million.
Bolland took over at M&S in 2010 and during his tenure he saw rival Next overtake the annual profits haul at his business.
Under his leadership, M&S has poured billions of pounds of investment into the business to try to turn around its fortunes
Richard Hunter, head of equities at Hargreaves Lansdown, said: “The elephant in the changing room remains, in the form of general merchandise.
“Whether M&S can ever return to former glories by enticing clothes shoppers back to its stores is arguably its largest challenge, even though the more recent experience implies at least a stabilisation of previously dropping numbers.”

When I was a little girl, I loved anything girlie or feminine. The first make-up I tried was a Tinkerbell peel-off nail polish, and I had a Polly Pocket solid perfume in a little heart watch on my wrist. My mum was quite strict and I wasn’t allowed to play with make-up until I was about eight, and then I wasn’t allowed to wear it to school until I was in my mid-teens. It was a weekend thing and obviously I was not interested in natural colours – I wanted purples, blues, greens and glitter. I had a baby blue sparkly eyeshadow that I would apply all the way up to my brows.

I remember being so fearless, too. I was up for everything, I didn’t ever judge anything and was just one of those kids who was always excited. I didn’t spend time overthinking things, and so when I started modelling in my teens, it was never a shock to the system. But after being in the industry for a couple of years, it suddenly dawned on me that it had become work. I think you make that choice as a model: do you want it to be a lifestyle or a career? For me, it became quite clear early on that if I wanted to do this as a job, I needed to take it seriously – I have a shelf life and I either had to put my head down and work hard or go back to school.

I had very over-plucked eyebrows and when I started modelling I was told I would need to let them grow back. As for beauty disasters, when I was about 14 I had pestered and pestered my mum to get a box of hair dye with brush-on highlights, and I ended up with two massive peroxide streaks, like a badger. I remember crumbling on to the bathroom floor screaming at my mother, “You ruined my life!” and sobbing my eyes out.
At 14, it seemed like the worst thing that could possibly happen to you. I think we bought about 10 boxes of hair dye to try and colour it back and it just ended up a kind of murky red and really damaged. There are no photographs of me for that whole year: my dad could never find photographs of me turning 14 to 15. I think I refused to have any taken.

Thankfully now I like to keep my hair looking natural and am really diligent with my skincare. It’s the most important thing, it’s my canvas for the make-up artists I work with, so that comes first. It’s not something that comes really easily for me. I drink so much water you wouldn’t believe and find that it has so many benefits, not only for my skin but for general wellbeing, dealing with jet-lag and weight loss. Water is the key to so much. I believe many of the issues we have with our bodies are down to dehydration.
I love to work out, too. People roll their eyes, but modelling can be physically demanding so I try to keep my body strong. I’ve always exercised: my mum was a fitness instructor when I was growing up, so I’ve always been active.

When I’m in London, I train with my brother, who is a personal trainer. I am flying all of the time and always jet-lagged, so it’s important that my body is strong and healthy.
As for beauty icons, I always think of Grace Kelly for her elegance and grace, Lauren Bacall for her sultry attitude, Elizabeth Taylor for the way she lived a life so full and wore her heart on her sleeve, and Brigitte Bardot, for her sultriness. Those are my favourites.

I know that for a lot of my girlfriends it’s a luxury to have time to themselves, any time to themselves – whether that’s a hot bath, having a massage or being able to spend time putting on your make-up. It’s “me time”, isn’t it? It’s indulgent. It’s vital to make that time for yourself because you come up with a lot of good ideas – I do, anyway, in the conversations that I have with myself in my bath. It’s a good space.

Hair dye 'ruined' Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's life

Supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's life was once "ruined" by hair dye when she tried to get highlights.
The 28-year-old was desperate to dye her hair when she was younger, but has admitted it ended up being a "disaster", reports femalefirst.co.uk.
"As for beauty disasters, when I was about 14 I had pestered my mum to get a box of hair dye with brush-on highlights, and I ended up with two massive peroxide streaks, like a badger. I remember crumbling on to the bathroom floor screaming at my mother, 'You ruined my life!' and sobbing my eyes out," she said.
"At 14, it seemed like the worst thing that could possibly happen to you. I think we bought about 10 boxes of hair dye to try and colour it back and it just ended up a kind of murky red and really damaged. There are no photographs of me for that whole year: my dad could never find photographs of me turning 14 to 15. I think I refused to have any taken," she added.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has joined the legions of young female celebrities demanding an equal playing field for men and women.

The underwear model, who in recent years has launched one of the most successful lingerie lines in the UK alongside Marks And Spencer,  has called on women to 'reach for the stars' when it comes to their careers.

In an new interview with Harpers Bazaar, Rosie credits her mother with installing a fighting spirit in her than has helped make her into the success that she is today.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley says ambition is a great quality in a woman and reveals her mother raised her to be strong

She told the magazine: 'I’m somebody who wants to have all the same rights as a man. If that’s what makes a feminist then so be it.

'I’m lucky because my mum raised me to be strong and to have ambition and drive and to reach for the stars, so to speak, to never put limitations on what could be achieved in life. I feel really excited about where we are as women.
'I think ambition is a great quality in a woman.'

Since her first big break modelling for Elle magazine in 2004, Rosie, now 28, has gone on to become one of the world's highest paid models.

She has also taken the well-trodden from model to actress, with roles in Transformers: Dark Of The Moon and more recently, Mad Max: Fury Road.

But despite these roles, the Devon-born star insists that she is not an actress and currently has no plans to do any more films.

She said: 'Will I do another movie? I don’t know. It’s not something I’m actively pursuing or have a lot of headspace for at this time.

'Which was always my attitude with Transformers and Mad Max, you know. I never set out to be an actress.

I was in the right place at the right time; I was asked to do an audition and then doors opened.

I think you’re really lucky to get asked to do something new, and to be paid to do it, so I jumped at both opportunities. But I definitely would not call myself an actress.'

While Rosie isn't fussed about future work on the silver screen, she is certain to press on with her occupation as a lingerie designer, claiming the collaboration is the proudest point in her career to date.

She said: 'The proudest accomplishment of my entire career is the Rosie For Autograph M&S collection. I always wanted it to be more than just another celebrity collaboration.

'I love both the creative and business sides of it – all the aspects of building a brand.

'You provide your customer with what your customer wants.'

British model and actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is affectionately known as “Rosebud” to her family and friends, yes for those lips, but also due to her endearing disposition. On the set of VIOLET GREY’s June Issue cover story shoot, however, a black leather trench coat, red lips and matching elongated nails radiated a different sort of energy.
Her supermodel stature was never something she had to grow into. By the age of 16, she signed a contract with an agency. By 21, she was wrapped up in textured trench coats for Burberry’s fall campaign and soon became the face of Burberry’s fragrance, Body. She has appeared on numerous magazine covers including British Vogue andHarper’s Bazaar UK, and was summoned to walk the runway for the likes of Marc Jacobs (Louis Vuitton) and Olivier Rousteing (Balmain).
The legendary Jerry Weintraub was gracious enough to invite photographer Emma Summerton and the VIOLET GREY production team into his Palm Desert home for the photo shoot, describes the model’s appeal more succinctly in the inscription he signed for her in his autobiography:
To Rosie,
Same name as my mother,
different look.
The home of a Hollywood mega producer was a fitting backdrop for the shoot since the model and actress has mogul trajectory in her own right. She has starred in one of the highest grossing films for Paramount Pictures,Transformers: The Dark Side of the Moon (2011), and will next year appear in Mad Max with Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy. Her Marks & Spencer lingerie line, Rosie for Autograph, is one of the most lucrative collaborations for the English retailer. Rosie, as it turns out, is infinitely bankable. Rosie, the Rosebud, finds true fulfillment in her work with UNICEF UK. Earlier this spring, she traveled to Cambodia on behalf of the foundation to raise awareness for the Soccer Aid fund. It’s that amalgam of wholesome sweetness, unlimited earning potential, and arresting, seductive allure that makes her so impossible to ignore.
On location at Weintraub’s sleek desert oasis (which was once used as a location for his film Ocean’s Eleven), as her endless legs unfold beneath her vintage chiffon dress and her blonde hair gleams in the desert sun, Huntington-Whiteley is no sugar, all spice. Rosebud is nowhere in sight. And if there’s one thing about her that everyone can agree upon, it’s that this girl’s got range.
